Kew Gardens' Moomin Adventures

Royal Botanic Gardens Kew
April 2017

Curated Place were commissioned for a fourth time to deliver the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew hugely popular Easter Festival. We worked with Finland’s most famous resident, Moomin. Briefed to create a family adventure that stayed true to the world of Moomin while achieving the learning aims of Kew we devised an in depth trail and craft activity adventure through the entirety of the gardens as families went on the quest for the Hemulen’s Herbarium.

Creating a bespoke event newspaper and working with Finnish app developers Tribered we invited children anda dults to join the Moomins and Curated Place’s storytellers for a botanical adventure through Kew Gardens as the Hemulen asked visitors to help his friends finding his collection of rare specimens that had been stolen by the mischievous Stinky and hidden around the Gardens. This led to an interactive trail of Botanical learning using the Moomin ́s central eco message as a hook.

Taking a lead from both the characterisation, style and the narrative of the original books we created a series of activity stations on a well-waymarked trail around RBG Kew’s spectacular site. Working with the Moomins to create a memorable family conservation and craft event through Britain’s finest Botanic Garden we ensured the spirit of Tove Jansson’s work remained true whilst introducing live storytelling from the Moomin canon to animate the site.

We created a new narrative, all the workshops, provided a script and performers for storytelling/immersive facilitation, and created a bespoke newspaper full of clues, activities with botanical facts for families to follow around the site to discover drop in self-led and facilitated crafts workshops. Curated Place provided an original storyline and concept along with all 3d design and build, film, audio, logistic management and workshop staffing.
