Today we welcomed our artists in residence for September and October, Yara Mekawi and Fady Galal, to the Curated Place Studio - all the way from Cairo. Mekawi and Galal will will present artworks influenced by one of the superstars of Arabic literature as well as being around our studios seeking to make new connections in the UK and in Manchester.
Their exhibition will run from 24 to 30 September. Saints features paintings and a short film drawing inspiration from the saintly figures featured in the literature of Nobel prize-winner Naguib Mahfouz. A maverick at documenting the social dynamics that shape life in modern Cairo, Mahfouz (1911-2006) was also a literary wizard, bringing surreal, supernatural figures into his tales.
Supported by a grant from the British Council we're extremely excited to be able to present new artworks from an exciting duo and start creating connections between our community in Manchester's Federation House and Cairo after two years working to bring the artists here. Big thanks to Elham Khattab of Out of the Circle for introducing us.
