Edinburgh: Secret City is a new body of work currently in production by Curated Place’s most prolific partnership Andy Brydon and Andrew Brooks. With Edinburgh Castle, St Giles’ High Kirk, The Assembly Rooms and the City of Edinburgh already behind the project we have begun exploring the unseen face of Edinburgh in preparation for a 2012 exhibition.
Brooks’ work marries the craftsmanship of fine-art photography with cutting edge digital image making to create a fascinating new perspective on cities by engaging with the forgotten, neglected and ignored spaces that serve to underpin our imaginings of the everyday. Beyond the exhibition itself the process of research and access builds a multi-layered narrative to accompany the images, engaging those unsung custodians of the city who normally operate out of sight. By doing so the project uncovers an untapped narrative of myth embedded in experience of the forgotten spaces and questions the importance of truth over authenticity in shaping identity.
‘Never Let the Facts Get in The Way of a Good Story: Memory, History, Authenticity And Truth in the City’
We are extremely excited to have the support of the University of Edinburgh in finding new and unusual locations in a city steeped in history and myth. As a result of this partnership Andy Brydon and Andrew Brooks have been invited as guest speakers for the 2010/11 Edinburgh Lectures by Queen Margaret’s College, Edinburgh to discuss the thinking behind the project and examine wider issues of how image making and urban identity intersect in contemporary society.
